So Long Aotearoa

Standard

Assalaamu’alaikum wr. wb.

Exactly a week ago, I and my family, Keluarga Ghifary, left New Zealand for good after calling this beautiful country home for the last 6 years. On March 2nd 2019, we flew out Wellington with a mixed feeling. Bittersweet. It has been one of, if not the toughest decision we have ever made as a family.

But we believe it was, and forever will be a good decision. The one that we won’t regret. Of course it’s not because we wanted to leave New Zealand, but because we know that we have left NZ in a good state.

We’ve lived a good life there. We’ve left good traces there. Our family, especially our children have experienced an amazing journey there. There is no regrets, there’s only grateful left. There might be few things that I (or we) haven’t done there though, but I consider them as bucket lists that are waiting to be checked one day. One day.

And here we are now, back in Indonesia. Ready to begin our new journey in another beautiful city that has always been close to our heart: Bandung.

Did we feel sad leaving New Zealand? Of course we did. Some of you might have already known that I really love New Zealand. I love Wellington so much. As I have mentioned here before, Wellington is the unrealistic ideal boyfriend that I’ve never had. As a hopeless romantic myself, leaving away my love I know I can’t leave Wellington and New Zealand just like that. I knew I have to do something. So I wrote a song. A love song.

Just like our other songs (you can find some of them here and here), I wrote the lyrics, Mr. Ghifary did the melody and arranged the music. And this time, our 6yo daughter Naisha chose the original title, it was “Leave you Long White Cloud”. Though I prefer my very own title, “So Long Aotearoa*”. This song was made less than a month before we left the coolest little capital in the world.

Wellington. The coolest little capital in the world.

Unfortunately, we were too busy with all the moving, packing and cleaning our house at the end of our life in Wellington that we haven’t finished recording the song and we haven’t made any music video (it was all the plan!). But there’s a video of us performing the song at our farewell with KAMASI – Indonesian community in Wellington, you can see it here.

I promise we’ll finish the recording and the video, one day. Just like I promise myself to come back to New Zealand, one day. For now, I hope you all can enjoy the song lyrics and all the love it contains below. Arohanui, Aotearoa. I love you, New Zealand. ❤❤❤

So Long Aotearoa

Now it’s time to leave you dear

Land of the long white cloud

My love for you will always be true

Aotearoa

You will always be in mind

I’ll hold you tight in my heart

It’s not goodbye though I will be far

So long and I’ll see you soon

Reff

All the memories

All the smiles, laughs and tears

Filled and warmed my soul

You taught me love

You taught me kind

You show me beauty in life

Now it’s time to leave you dear

Land of the long white cloud

My love for you will always be true

Aotearoa

Back to Reff

You will always be in mind

I’ll hold you tight in my heart

It’s not goodbye though I will be far

So long and I’ll see you soon 2x

PS:

*Aotearoa means New Zealand in Maori language, which has a meaning of ‘Land of the long white cloud’
